Re-imagining Democracy: is there a role for design?

Paola Pierri, Professor of Social Design at the University of the Arts Bern

Experio Lab is inviting to the Experio Seminars. Once a month we’ll invite interesting researchers to talk about service design, service logic and user-driven services in public sector.

This talk will explore the role of design in democracy and the idea of Democratic Design as an intentional practice for the design and maintenance of new modes and spaces for democratic participation and to achieve democratic outcomes.

According to John Dewey we have acted for long time as if our democracy was something that perpetuated itself automatically; a machine that solved the problem of perpetual motion in politics. This talk draws on practical projects of democratic innovation and on the literature from political studies of democracy, to reflect on the fact that democracy is not automatic, but it rather needs to re-imagine itself continuously. At the intersection of democratic theory and design practice, this seminar will put forward a proposal for a practice of design that takes democracy (and its challenges) as an object and as a value to pursue.

The seminar will be held in english.

October 18th 13:30 – 14:45 on Teams

The seminar is free of charge and open for everyone.
