Design’s Expanding Orders: From Making Things to Making Worlds

Marzia Mortati (PhD), Associate Professor in Service Design and Innovation, Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano

Experio Lab is inviting to the Experio Seminars. Once a month we’ll invite interesting researchers to talk about service design, service logic and user-driven services in public sector.

Design has expanded far beyond its traditional domains, increasingly positioning itself as a way of knowing and intervening in complex societal systems. Yet as design aspires to higher “orders”—from shaping products to shaping governance—it risks overlooking the political, economic, and epistemological assumptions that underpin its own practice. Drawing on the notion of the Fifth Order of Design, this talk examines how design knowledge is being redefined in contexts such as public innovation and AI-mediated systems, and how ideals of participation and facilitation can inadvertently depoliticize design’s role. The talk calls for reclaiming design as a critical, situated, and political practice—one that is not only about enabling collaboration but also about questioning who defines problems, whose knowledge counts, and which futures design serves.

The seminar will be held in english.

April 10th 13:30 – 14:45 on Zoom

The seminar is free of charge and open for everyone.
