Designing Public Service Systems from Within

Audun Formo Hay, Researcher at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design & Community psychologist in Bærum Municipality

Experio Lab is inviting to the Experio Seminars. Once a month we’ll invite interesting researchers to talk about service design, service logic and user-driven services in public sector.

Service design is increasingly used as a distinct approach to shape public services around people’s lives. Yet some of its underlying assumptions can unintentionally solidify solutions and limit how people relate and act within public systems, making them irrelevant or inappropriate in diverse situations. Drawing on doctoral research in the Norwegian child welfare context, this presentation reimagines service design as an ongoing, collective, and relational practice carried out by the people who live and work within public service systems. Rather than arriving with solutions from outside, it explores enabling practices that support people to design public service systems from within.

The seminar was recorded March 6th 2026.
